 Quilt Preparation

Quilt Top

It will save you time and money if you prepare your quilt top prior to quilting. Trim off any loose threads, press seams well and check that all seams are sewn securely. Your quilt should lie flat -if your borders are wavy, fix this before sending off for quilting, as the quilting process will not cure the problem! Check any good quilting book for instructions on how to accurately attach borders, or phone me for advice.

Backing

Choose a fabric colour and pattern that complements your quilt top. It is helpful if your backing is patterned rather than plain. If your backing needs piecing, it is generally best to have the seam running horizontally in relation to the top of the quilt. Alternatively, I can provide you with wide backing fabric ( from Brenda Wade at Widebacks) at a very reasonable cost, in an extensive pattern and colour range. Ask to see my catalogue of samples. No more piecing and smoother quilting! It is also helpful if you can square up the backing ie make sure edges are trimmed straight and are on grain. If you're not sure, ring for advice.

Batting

You can supply your own batting or I can provide at retail cost. Recommended batting:

Nu-Wool or Matilda's Own 60% wool/40% polyester batting.

Please ensure the backing and batting are 4" larger all around than the quilt top and square off the top and bottom. No need to pin or baste!
